Scripture reading:    1 Corinthians 3
Scripture text :         1 Corinthians 3:23; Catechism Lord’s Day 1

. . . and you are Christ’s; and Christ is God’s.

Is it of any importance to you that the Bible says this about you? You belong to Christ. Are you touched by it, or are you indifferent to it?

Let’s look at two questions:
1. Do you know Christ?
2. Are you a careless person?

1. Do you know Christ?

“. . . and you are Christ’s; and Christ is God’s.” This sentence in the Bible puts you in a tight spot.
Let no one deceive himself.

Every one of us here can easily deceive him with all kinds of claptrap.
In our congregation too. Those among us, who sometimes complain about outward issues that annoy them, should consider whether their attitude is not perhaps a reflection of their poor relationship with the Lord.
Belonging to Christ is no simple issue. It is a powerful issue, especially when we consider the consequences mentioned by Paul:
To understand this more clearly we should consider that the Book of Revelation teaches that the Church is the Bride of Jesus Christ. Of course the Bridegroom will let his Bride partake in all the glory He achieved through his death on the cross.

Therefore all the faithful should test and examine themselves regarding this matter.
The Lord calls us, as a congregation, to the church services because He has a living relationship with us.
Let’s put the old argument, namely “I only go to church when I feel like going”, to right.
Those who truly belong to Christ are usually known for the following:
2. Are we careless people?
One of the most telling differences between true and false confessors is reflected in their actions when they have sinned.
In this part of his letter, Paul warns against the wisdom of the worldling. This doesn’t mean that those who belong to Christ should not have wisdom and knowledge.
The question of redemption is most important, because we are all going to die. What then?
The Second Coming is not an easy moment for unbelievers. At that moment the Lord ends all time.
This doctrine of “belonging to Christ” does not produce careless people. Only false believers become careless and surrender to evil.
In the present time it is especially important that you experience the consolation of belonging to Christ. Anything can happen, but it will not cause you any damage, because Jesus protects you.
You, with body and soul, belong to your Saviour Jesus Christ.
Obey the Lord and strive not to do wrong, because you belong to Christ.

Let’s read together Catechism Lord’s Day 1.

1. Q. What is your only comfort in life and death?
A. That I am not my own,[1] but belong with body and soul, both in life and in death,[2] to my faithful Saviour Jesus Christ.[3] He has fully paid for all my sins with His precious blood, and has set me free from all the power of the devil.[5] He also preserves me in such a way[6] that without the will of my heavenly Father not a hair can fall from my head;[7] indeed, all things must work together for my salvation.[8] Therefore, by His Holy Spirit He also assures me of eternal life[9] and makes me heartily willing and ready from now on to live for Him.[10]

2. Q. What do you need to know in order to live and die in the joy of this comfort?
A. First, how great my sins and misery are;[1] second, how I am delivered from all my sins and misery;[2] third, how I am to be thankful to God for such deliverance.[3]
